The Reference Point
Everything exists for us to know ourselves, and the child is the purest form of that knowledge. In our highly artificial world, it is vital that we preserve the child’s spirit so we do not lose the connection to nature that we essentially need in order to live a true and meaningful life.

The Disruption
When the nature of the child is disturbed, an internal chaos ensues, causing them to seek that same connection through material means. They begin overcompensating for the loss of who they truly are, eventually creating an "acceptable" identity for society. This is evident when we hear people—especially parents—say things like "curiosity killed the cat" or "use your inside voice." These restrictions shrink "The Self"—or as I call it, the "Anoteros" or the superior self. Deprived of their natural mirror, the child seeks other means of expression that lead to repression and rebellion, which eventually leap over into adulthood. If you ask me, it was curiosity that freed the cat.

The Overcompensating World
Since the Industrial Age, the world has been at a loss and has been overcompensating ever since. This loss of connection to both nature and community has led us to an age of consumption and compulsion, where social media and streaming services act as a proxy for that lost connection. The data confirms this distortion: children under 2 years of age average one hour of media use, while children aged 2–8 average up to three hours daily. Teenagers spend even more time in front of a screen, with upwards of nine hours daily. We have become so "connected" that we are disconnected in the process. This disconnection causes us to lead in self-destructive ways; for that which seems separate is really what is holding it all together.

The Cure of Nature
I have spent a significant amount of time working in the fields of nature and in warehouse settings, and nothing compares to the exuberance that comes from being in the fresh air. I recall my days in elementary school and the sheer relief of being out for recess. Some would argue that I only craved the outdoors as an escape from school, but in reality, it is what the child would be doing anyway until they are pulled away.

The Be-All and End-All
This is not a blind attack on the "Digital Empire," as the individual is ultimately responsible for their own compulsive nature. At the same time, it is vital that we have leaders who are aware of the issues plaguing a society that isn't so aware. We must remember that children are essential to the longevity of the human species, and every adult was once a child. What kind of heirs do you want to leave this planet to?
